Perched on rugged West Huron Island within the Huron National Wildlife Refuge, the historic Huron Island Lighthouse has stood as a beacon on Lake Superior since 1868. Often described as a water lover’s version of the Grand Canyon, this remote and breathtaking destination offers unforgettable scenery and a true “John Muir moment” for visitors seeking natural beauty and solitude. The Huron Island Lighthouse Preservation Association (HILPA), recently rechartered, is partnering with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to develop plans for preserving the lighthouse and its associated historic structures, helping ensure this remarkable landmark endures for generations to come.
